Time-Life Music's series of yearly samplers under the Your Hit Parade logo does not, strictly speaking, follow that popularity chart or any other, but it does approximate the year's most successful music. Typically, for 1946, the compilers' choice of 24 tracks includes 18 of the most popular songs of the year, 16 of them in their most popular versions. The first full year after World War II was the last in which big bands dominated: ten of the selections here are credited to orchestra leaders, even though every one features a vocalist....
